The artist
Marcel Marlier, Mouscron's gentle pencil
A brilliant illustrator born in Herseaux, Marcel Marlier (1930-2011) gave life to Martine and shaped the imagination of generations of children with the gentleness and precision of his line.

Biography
A master of realistic illustration
Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts, Marcel Marlier became known for a remarkably true-to-life style: light, movement and emotion rendered with a realism rare in children's literature.
From the age of 21, he joined Éditions Casterman. His meeting with author Gilbert Delahaye gave rise, in 1954, to a character destined to become an icon: Martine.
For over half a century, he shaped the world of the little girl and her dog Patapouf, lavishing care on every setting, every expression, every detail of daily life. His work goes beyond simple illustration: he composed true paintings.
Today, his home town honours him through the Centre Marcel Marlier, which preserves and showcases the sketches, documents and memories of this exceptional career.
